Where Can You See Dolphins in New Zealand?

Did you know that dolphins are considered as being some of the topmost intelligent animals in the world? They draw a lot of people, primarily because of their friendliness and playful nature. If you are in New Zealand and would love to see these interesting marine mammals, you are in luck. There are lots of places that you can visit.

Hauraki Gulf

Hauraki Gulf, which is pretty close to downtown Auckland, is a great place to go to when you want to watch dolphins. Nothing equals the fascination that you will experience as you see them leap alongside your boat. Here, there are bottlenose dolphins as well as common ones.

The Bay of Islands

This is a famous natural harbour that gives both locals and travellers the chance to see dolphins and also swim with them. Expect to find both bottlenose and common dolphins at this location. If you are fortunate, you may even spot some killer whales, but do not try to get close to them because it is highly dangerous. The place also offers picturesque views, and you can take some beautiful photos.

Kaikoura

Kaikoura takes pride in its numerous natural wonders. Every year, travellers and locals flock the town to see different species of dolphins. These include hector’s dolphins, dusky dolphins, bottlenose dolphins as well as the southern right whale dolphins whose lack of dorsal fins makes them unique. You might even get a glimpse of a few killer whales while you are in the area.

Goat Island

Goat Island is about 40.4 miles from Auckland. It is known for its clear waters and being home to many species of beautiful fish as well as common and bottlenose dolphins. After you are done watching the dolphins feel free to snorkel. Scuba diving is another activity that you can enjoy there.
